Opposition open to dialogue despite rejecting election results
Maputo (AIM): Mozambican opposition parties declared they are open to dialogue with the government, despite their unanimous rejection as fraudulent of the election results declared a week ago by the country’s highest body in matters of electoral law, the Constitutional Council.
Daniel Chapo proclaimed president of Mozambique
Maputo (AIM): The Constitutional Council, Mozambique’s highest body in matters of constitutional and electoral law proclaimed the candidate of the ruling Frelimo Party, Daniel Chapo, as the winner of the presidential election held on 9 October, and hence as the country’s next President.
President Nyusi assures the country he will leave office in January
Maputo (AIM): Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi assured the nation he has no intention of staying in office beyond the end of his current term, in mid-January 2025.
At least 76 people shot dead during demonstrations
Maputo (AIM): The “Decide” Electoral Platform, a prominent Mozambican NGO, claims that at least 76 people were shot dead and another 240 were injured by the security forces during the mass demonstrations that have been taking place throughout the country since 21 October.
Constitutional Council postpones decisions on major frauds
Maputo (AIM): The Constitutional Council, Mozambique’s highest body in matters of electoral law, has refused to take any decision on complaints of serious frauds presented by opposition parties, and has instead postponed any decision to the phase of validating the general election results, which could still be weeks away.
