The expert elaborated that the BRICS countries could also create new international institutions in the areas where there are no organizations yet, according to TASS, a Russian media outlet.
BRICS is an intergovernmental organization established in 2006 and new members joined the bloc in 2024.
Adding to Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, it now includes Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, UAE and Saudi Arabia; the latter has not formalized membership but participates in BRICS meetings. Indonesia also joined the global emerging bloc early this year.
«This (coalition) also includes the creation of a coalition within the framework of international negotiations. There is a very good example when, perhaps for the first time, the BRICS countries presented a united front and spoke on behalf of the entire association – a conference on biodiversity. But this is actually the only precedent.
It would be very good if the BRICS voice could be heard in a united front at various negotiations, climate negotiations or within the framework of the World Trade Organization,» he said at a conference of the Valdai International Discussion Club and the Center for Russian Studies at the East China Pedagogical University (VKPU) in Shanghai.
Makarov further stressed that: «And there are all conditions for this in many areas. The BRICS countries are really united or similar in their opinions, such coalitions have simply not been created yet. They need to be created, and this will strengthen our position, amplify our voice.”
According to the expert, the BRICS countries could also create new international institutions in the areas where there are no organizations yet.
«The best example is addressing the consequences of natural disasters,» the expert believes. «There is not a single international institution that actually coordinates the activities of states to counteract the consequences of natural disasters. It’s a great opportunity that the BRICS countries could occupy.»
The conference of the Valdai International Discussion Club and the Center for Russian Studies at the East China Pedagogical University is attended by more than 60 leading experts from Russia and China. Experts discuss the global and Eurasian agendas and bilateral relations between Russia and China.
The key topic is The Space of Joint Development: Global and Eurasian Dimensions, it was indicated.
