Israeli aggression on Gaza, different methods of committing a genocide

Palestinian Broadcasting Corporation (PBC) A genocide is “the deliberate and systematic destruction of a group of people because of their ethnicity, nationality, religion, or race”, according to the Encyclopedia Britannica.
By Safa Jomaa   Our world witnessed several genocides like the Srebrenica genocide that took place in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1995, Sabra and Shatila massacre in Lebanon in 1982, the Rwandan genocide in 1994, the Darfur genocide in 2003, and others. However, the world is observing currently a new genocide that is taking place in Gaza-Palestine. A genocide being perpetrated by Israel since the 7th of October 2023 against the people of Gaza. It is a unique genocide in the history of the Israeli occupation in Palestine. Although Israel has been carrying out numerous genocides against Palestinians since 1948, this current one is the most cruel and brutal. In fact, Israel is following different methods in committing this mass extermination. It is causing the death of thousands of Palestinians in a variety of ways. Obviously, it is a genocide of an exceptional type, especially that Gazans cannot escape death due to the blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip by Israel since 2006. And despite the displacement of the people of Gaza from the north of the Strip to the south, death is still chasing them in every corner. This systematic killing that has started on the 7th of October 2023 is being perpetrated by the continuous Israeli bombing of Gaza Strip. It is a structured aggression that targets Gazan civilians and Gazan buildings. There is no difference between men, women, elderly people, or children. Everyone in Gaza is targeted by missiles and rockets. Before the Israeli ground intervention in Gaza, Gazans would die whether by a direct missile or under the rubble of buildings also bombarded by Israel. However, bombs and rockets are not the only weapon leading to a genocide. Indeed, Israel also kills Palestinians by directing its attacks toward hospitals and healthcare centers in Gaza. These centers that contain hundreds of wounded people are no more able to provide them with care and treatment because of being bombed by Israel. Moreover, what makes hospitals go out of service is the lack of fuel resulting from Israel’s blockade preventing aid from entering the Strip. Additionally, besides fuel, it is prohibited to enter medicine or medical needs to Gaza, which is a problem that speeds up the process of hospitals becoming inoperative, and increases the toll of deaths in Gaza during this Israeli aggression. The obstruction of aid extends beyond fuel and medical supplies; it also includes food, water, and other essentials. This is because accelerating genocide involves depriving people of these basic needs. Israel uses starvation as a weapon in Gaza. This war crime encompasses Israel’s razing of agricultural areas that supply Gazans with vegetables. In reality, several public statements have been made by high-ranking Israeli officials to express their aim to deprive civilians in Gaza of food, water and fuel, according to Human Rights Watch. Food shortage has also provoked acute malnutrition among children in Northern Gaza Strip. According to UNICEF, 1 in 3 children under 2 years of age in the Northern Gaza Strip suffer from acute malnutrition. At least 23 children in Northern Gaza Strip have died from malnutrition and dehydration in recent weeks. For Israel, it is insufficient to kill children by bombarding homes and buildings. Gazan children die now as a result of food and water scarcity. Is bombing and cutting basic needs enough to empty Gaza of its residents? Absolutely not! According to Euro-Med Monitor, Israeli forces in Gaza have committed field executions and random arrests of Gazan civilians including children and women. Gazan detainees were stripped of their clothes and subjected to severe beatings and harassments despite the very cold weather. In short, Israel’s ongoing actions in Gaza constitute a genocide. By targeting civilians, destroying infrastructure, and depriving people of basic needs like food and medicine, Israel is committing severe human rights violations. The international community must act urgently to stop these atrocities and hold those responsible accountable.
