In a communiqué delivered at the end of the SADC Extraordinary Summit, the Executive Secretary Elias Magosi said the regional bloc expressed its deepest condolences for those affected by ongoing conflicts, particularly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and other troubled regions.

“The Summit denounced all acts of destabilisation and reaffirmed its support for diplomatic and peacekeeping efforts to restore order,” said Mr Magosi.

He said the security and humanitarian challenges, including disruptions to food supply lines and essential services, need to be addressed urgently.

SADC also reaffirmed its decision to deploy a peace and security mission to support affected communities.

“The deployment aims to safeguard regional stability and reinforce efforts toward lasting peace,” Magosi said. He said diplomatic engagement and regional cooperation are key in resolving conflicts.

“SADC calls on all stakeholders to work towards sustainable solutions that ensure peace, security and economic development,” Magosi said.

In his closing remarks at the Summit, SADC chairperson President of Zimbabwe Emmerson Mnangagwa has urged Member States to intensify efforts to secure peace and stability, adding that the success of the region’s Vision 2050 and African Union  Agenda 2063 depends on a solid foundation of security.

Mnangagwa said silencing the guns, particularly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), is an urgent issue.

“We must remain relentless in our quest to create a peaceful and prosperous SADC and Africa,” he said. “No one and no place must be left behind. It is our collective duty to ensure lasting peace so that our people can enjoy development.”

He urged all parties to the conflict to honour the Luanda Ceasefire Agreement and the Nairobi Peace Process, adding that dialogue is essential for lasting stability. “Military efforts alone are not enough. Sustainable peace can only be achieved through inclusive dialogue and political solutions,” Mnangagwa said.

He also called on the international community to increase humanitarian aid for those affected by the conflict.

As the Summit ended, leaders reaffirmed their commitment to regional stability and economic growth, with President Mnangagwa’s message serving as a clear call to action – Africa must take charge of its own destiny.
