Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire takes effect in Lebanon

Beirut, (PIC) An Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire has taken effect at 16:00 (local time) on Wednesday to end more than 13 months of military confrontations across the border and two months of open war between the two parties.

Many of Lebanese displaced people began to return to their homes in the south, amid warnings not to go back.

Before the agreement began to take effect, the Lebanese Hezbollah and Israel had launched attacks on each other. Hezbollah announced bombing areas in northern Israel, while Israel preceded the ceasefire agreement by launching a series of large-scale raids on the Lebanese capital and its southern suburb and several villages and towns in southern and eastern Lebanon.

The attacks came in conjunction with the United Satates President Joe Biden’s announcement of reaching a ceasefire agreement between Hezbollah and Israel, after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the security government’s approval.

Biden said the agreement will be implemented “completely”, and there will be no deployment of US forces in southern Lebanon, emphasizing that the agreement will take effect at 10:00 (Lebanon time) on Wednesday.

Biden asserted that if Hezbollah violates the agreement, Israel has the right to defend itself, saying that the agreement supports Lebanon’s sovereignty.

“During the next few days, the United States will make another attempt with Türkiye, Qatar and others to reach a ceasefire in Gaza,” Biden added.

He also stressed that the United States is ready to reach a ceasefire agreement in Gaza, a historic agreement between Israel and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and to include a security agreement that also leads to the establishment of a Palestinian state.

The ceasefire agreement states that Israel will not carry out any offensive military operation against targets in Lebanon from the land and the sea, and that Hezbollah and all other resistance organizations in Lebanese territory do not carry out any resistance act against Israel.

The agreement provides for Israel and Lebanon’s recognition of the importance of the UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

The agreement confirms that obliging Israel and Lebanon not to carry out any attack does not deny the right of the two parties to exercise the right to self-defense.

The agreement also stipulates that the official security and military forces of Lebanon will be the only armed party allowed to carry weapons or use forces in southern Lebanon.

Among the ceasefire agreement provisions are dismantling all illegal installations concerned with the production of weapons and related materials, infrastructure and military sites and confiscating any illegal weapons that do not go in line with these obligations.

It also stipulated that every sale, supply, or production of weapons or any materials related to weapons to Lebanon will be under the supervision and control of the Lebanese government.

The ceasefire agreement includes an announcement of the formation of an acceptable committee by Israel and Lebanon to supervise and help ensure the implementation of these obligations and that Israel and Lebanon report any possible violation of these obligations to the committee and the UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon).

The agreement allows Lebanon to deploy its official security and army forces along all borders, transit points, and the line that defines the southern region according to the deployment plan.

Under the agreement, “Israel will gradually withdraw its forces from the south towards the blue line within a period of up to 60 days.”

The ceasefire agreement states that the United States will push for indirect negotiations between Israel and Lebanon in order to reach an agreement to demarcate the land borders.
